Mathematics

The strands in Numeracy have slightly changed due to the introduction of the new National Curriculum. The new strands are:

· Number and Algebra

· Statistics and Probability

· Geometry and Measurements

Our focus areas for Term 1 will be predominantly Number. Initially, students are pretested on each sub category to determine their understanding and skills in each area of learning. Results are then gathered and appropriate learning tasks can then be provided to the students. To assume that all children are at the same level of ’readiness’ in the multitude of topics covered in Numeracy, would be unreasonable.

Our approach ensures that students who require help, require consolidation or extending will have access to these opportunities. Year 6 will not only re-visit skills taught throughout their Primary Years, but it will explore new and challenging aspects of Numeracy to assist with their transition to the Middle School.


Glorious Camp

There is nothing quite like going on a year 6 Aquatics Camp. The 2010 camp was unique for our students as it was their final Scotch Junior School Camp. A slight change of plans on the first largely due to the weather. It was decided that bowling and a movie were two welcomed alternatives.

In evenings we resided at Camp Dizintari, Normanville and travelled to and from Port Noarlunga each day by bus for our Aquatics Experience. Aquatics experiences included canoeing, surfing, wave skiing and a beach walk. Evenings were filled with quiz shows and Red Faces. Our final day was a relaxing day at Normanville Beach. We can safely say that all students experienced a camp to remember. Well done Year 6s, you too made this a camp that we will never forget! An iMovie has been made of the camp experience and was given to parents at our end of Term 1 showcase. Please feel free to share with your friends and family so they can enjoy the experience with you.

Differentiation

Differentiation

Differentiating instruction means creating multiple paths so that students of different abilities, interests or learning needs experience equally appropriate ways to absorb, use, develop and present concepts as a part of the daily learning process. It allows students to take greater responsibility and ownership for their own learning, and provides opportunities for peer teaching and cooperative learning. Wide ranges of strategies are implemented to ensure that students progress at a rate that is commensurate with their ability and learning style. Below is a sample of some of the many ways that differentiation occurs in the Year 6 curriculum.

Readiness / Ability

Teachers can use a variety of assessments to determine a student's ability or readiness. However, readiness is constantly changing and as readiness changes it is important that students be permitted to move between different groups in a flexible manner.

Adjusting Questions

During large group discussion activities, we direct the higher level questions to the students who can more able and adjust questions accordingly for student with greater needs. All students are answering important questions that require them to think but the questions are targeted towards the student’s ability or readiness level.

Compacting Curriculum

Compacting the curriculum means assessing a student’s knowledge, skills and attitudes and providing alternative activities for the student who has already mastered curriculum content. This can be achieved by pre-testing basic concepts or using performance assessment methods.

Tiered Assignments

Tiered activities are a series of related tasks of varying complexity. All of these activities relate to essential understanding and key skills that students need to acquire. Teachers assign the activities as alternative ways of reaching the same goals taking into account individual student needs.

Peer Teaching

Occasionally a student may have personal needs that require one-on-one instruction that go beyond the needs of his or her peers. After receiving this extra instruction the student could be designated as the "resident expert" for that concept or skill and can get valuable practice by being given the opportunity to re-teach the concept to peers. In these circumstances both students benefit.

Independent Study Projects

Independent Study is a research project where students learn how to develop the skills for independent learning. The degree of help and structure will vary between students and depend on their ability to manage ideas, time and productivity.

Learning Contracts

A learning contract is a written agreement between teacher and student that will result in students working independently. The contract helps students to set daily and weekly work goals and develop management skills. It also helps the teacher to keep track of each student’s progress. The actual assignments will vary according to specific student needs.

National Young Leaders Day

Friday 18 March – Adelaide Convention Centre - North Terrace [Image]The National Young Leaders’ Day is designed to inspire and encourage students to think about leadership in their own lives and in the lives of the speakers they hear from. Students had opportunities to hear from a range of high profile personalities, from all walks of life, who modelled positive leadership. It is our hope that through this experience students will enhance their understanding of leadership whilst learning how to manage stress levels and explore and develop their views on leadership in a safe environment.
